Come on, 1 trillion market cap
  • Sushisamurai - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

lol, a thinner macbook... my question is, does it bend?

    boo core-M
  • Sushisamurai - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

i suppose that's okay, as now they're re-segmentating the lines from pro and regular macbook. there wasn't such a huge performance hit before tho
  • close - Tuesday, March 10, 2015 - link

This is a normal tablet with a non-detachable keyboard and a hi-tech touchpad.
  • jjj - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Apple's first Netbook lol - poor perf and small screen, that's a Netbook
  • Sushisamurai - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

This does look like a netbook. But look at the price! It's competing directly with MBA line prices, with the only perk of being lighter, smaller, and thinner. Problem for me is the MBA's has always been gimped by performance (and maybe large bezels in 2015). This new macbook, even as cool as it looks with the colors, could very well be a major disappointment
  • DCide - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

"The Only perk ..." - are you kidding me? Whether you're comparing it to netbooks or the Air, it has a much better screen, is the first major product with USB 3.1 connectivity, has a leading edge trackpad, a leading edge keyboard, dual-stream AC WiFi, ... were you even paying attention?
  • Sushisamurai - Tuesday, March 10, 2015 - link

If only I were kidding - USB-C addition to the other macbook lines would require a form factor change, which I think will happen with their usual laptop line refresh. The trackpad is also included in the revised rMBP 13", at the same price (but with an i5 and 128GB storage), dual stream WIFI has been in the MacBooks for a while now.

Compared to the 13" air, configured to same price/RAM, the new MB gets USB-C but less ports for everything else, a higher resolution screen but a slower processor to push it (a core-M vs an i5), a "new" keyboard switch, smaller bezels. Seems like a tough sell to me.
  • GotThumbs - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

"Apple has basically built a 12" tablet with a keyboard"

Did I miss the addition of a touch screen by Apple?

Seems more to me like Apples built a highend ChromeBook using their OS.

Poor performance?? x10 of ANY tablet. >= Surface Pro 2/3
  • GC2:CS - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Surface pro 3 is hardly 10x faster than an iPad Air 2.

I think it's around 2x or maybe even less (at far far higher power).
  • DCide - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

A 2.4 to 2.9 GHz "i5-like" 2C/4T processor shouldn't be that slow ... 1.1 to 1.3 GHz is just the base speed, to save battery life under "normal" use.
  • fteoath64 - Wednesday, March 11, 2015 - link

Double boo for core M at 1.1Ghz. Pathetic gpu would barely run a 1440p video at 30 fps. I am talking about a GoPro 2.7k video playing on it. Sure want to see detailed benchmarks on the cpu concerned. But early indications i see of the HD 5300 gpu is very disappointing. Almost same as HD4200. Sad to not see an NV gpu on it. Why fanless ? Put a silent fan in there as batteries needed cooling as well or else they die in 18 months ....

    Core-M??!?!??!?!
I was promised ARM chips in my Macbook Airs!
I want this to be at least 0.05 mm thinner and 75% slower or I'm not buying one!
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Considering it's not a MacBook Air, you can keep waiting.
  • jameskatt - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

No one at Apple promised anyone that MacBooks would have ARM CPUs. Ever. Get your facts straight.
  • nathanddrews - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Core M annnnnd....? No dGPU? :|
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

No Thunderbolt means Apple is no longer tied to Intel, for future products in the Macbook AIR.
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

    It's a MacBook.
  • danbob999 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

It also means the beginning of the end of Thunderbolt.
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

    No it does not.
  • Alexey291 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

There wasn't much of a beginning to Thunderbolt either...
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Thunderbolt / Thunderbolt 2 is all over the place in the "new" Mac Pro, Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, Mac Air. It's not going anywhere for the time being. USB 3.0 and even 3.1 does not really compete with it in high performance DAS applications.
  • Alexey291 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Its ok. You'll get over it :)
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

I'm not worried at all. It's not dead.
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Apple Watch doesn't have Thunderbolt. This means Thunderbolt is dead. /sarcasm
  • nathanddrews - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

    Digital Touch? You mean NFC?
  • bleh0 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Those watch prices...I know people will buy them but talk about robbery.
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

I think all they care about is that people of influence (and money) buy them. It's limited run, so they are a pure marketing play with nothing but profit upside. If they can get Kim Kardashian's wearing them on their reality TV show, Apple wins. People like that want something that is exclusive (and a limited run 10K watch will be) so that's what they're shooting for there. I don't want one, would probably wear a sport model if given to me as a gift.
  • Sushisamurai - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

    Payday 2: Hoxton Breakout.

I hear you man, my current daily watch cost me $1200, solar powered, stainless steel with sapphire crystal, accurate to 1ms, water resistant to 200m, titanium bands. I've used it for 8 years and never had to reset the time or adjust it. Also supports all time zones/add your own. With that said, the sport version is actually reasonably priced - I think the stainless steel version is over priced. You can get stainless steel, sapphire crystal watches with temp/radio/altitude/barometric/compass sensors for about $500, with a stainless steel clasp. Going to $1000 means better materials/accuracy/features - having a device slaved to my phone that would cost more than the actual phone and not of its own "master" seems ludicrous to me.

I wouldn't even know what charging your watch would feel like.
  • jameskatt - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Since the Apple Watch is a wearable computer - not just a watch - the prices are amazingly reasonable. If you are simply not into fashion then just get the least expensive model. They all work the same.
  • Sushisamurai - Tuesday, March 10, 2015 - link

Sure, i get that there's a premium added to the watch due to it being a wearables, with the "fashion" aspect another price factored in. Assuming we remove the "fashion" aspect and charge the $599 for the stainless steel and sapphire version, how much of that $599 is allocated to the wearable computer vs the watch (rhetorical, there's also goodwill associated to iOS)? Are those prices competitive? To be they're not, unless there's some more really useful features not discovered as of yet.
  • Spoelie - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

And this isn't just ordinary 18kt gold!!!
  • JBird7986 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Those prices are totally insane. Starting at $10K for the Edition?! Even the $500 disparity based on watch bands is nuts. I'm out, Apple....not that I was ever in to start with.
  • Alexey291 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Wait wait there is someone actually surprised by this?

I thought the prices were a known quantity by this point...
  • JBird7986 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

I was expecting a few hundred dollars. Maybe like 2K for the gold Edition version. But that's simply highway robbery.
  • Alexey291 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Nah its pretty much a normal price for a fashionable gold watch.

Thinking that its something other than that is where you're mistaken.

Besides the sport one IS a few hundred bucks. So I'm still not seeing the reason for (fake) outrage.

and again. The prices are literally spot on with predictions made half a year ago when it was 1st announced.
  • waldoh - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Here is the problem with 10k for a gold version of the exact same watch that sells for $350-600.

    A steel rolex sub = $8000.
    A gold rolex sub = $34000.
$26k difference but you get atleast 10k-15k in gold weight alone. So sure there still is atleast a 10k price difference to cover the more difficult machining, waste, and "prestige" of gold.

The apple watch is probably the thinnest gold to keep weight down (unlike mechanical watches, people want hefty weight). Chances are for that $9.5k price difference, you only get about 1k worth of gold weight.
  • Alexey291 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

aaaaand again you are getting it wrong. Its a limited edition, "cool fashion" watch. (Plus you're basing it on the guess re: how much gold there is in the apple watch too)

Its not about the weight in gold. And it never has been. If it ever was then Patek Philippe would never sell a single watch.

And no I'm not comparing apple to Patek. That would be silly.
  • jameskatt - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

A gold Rolex has $5000 worth of gold . The price is jacked up to $50,000 because it is a gold Rolex.
  • Sushisamurai - Tuesday, March 10, 2015 - link

I don't understand your argument here. You're saying there's a 9x premium over cost (less due to cost of goods/bill of materials) because of the goodwill associated with Rolex. Then, using waldoh's numbers, Apple has a 15.7x increase in cost to consumer going to gold, versus the 3.25x Rolex is charging.

As you clearly stated, the "worth" or cost of the gold is small compared to the overall cost to consumer. So, I'm paying more for the Goodwill of Apple than I would for Rolex. Did I get that right?
  • fteoath64 - Wednesday, March 11, 2015 - link

Put it this way. A Rolex will last a hundred years. Gold Apple watch will deteriorate from inside with battery leaking toxic fluids turning the pcb inside to goo. Leaving a heap of poor only 18k gold not worth 2 grand in its weight. Hows that for longivity ?
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Exactly my thought on that. What's the surprise?
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

    It's fashion / Apple pricing.
  • jameskatt - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

You obviously have no idea how much high end watches cost. Gold Rolex watches start at $36,000 and above. The cost of the gold is immaterial in that the prices reflect the prestige of the watch.
  • Michael Bay - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Oh, pardon him. After all, people who know all this trivia about premium watches somehow NEVER have the watches themselves.
  • PhytochromeFr - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

CORE M?!? That is COMPLETELY BULLSHIT! Plz, Tell me there is another normal Broadwell-U Option.
  • usernametaken76 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

It's a completely new model. What is bullshit about that? You don't have to buy it.
  • robco - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

The 13" rMBP was updated to the new Broadwell-U chips and also receives the new trackpad.
  • Mike B - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

They didn't mention anything about security, or did I just miss it? Seems a bit strange to have your email/sms/schedule/health data/etc unprotected (once the phone leaves your arm, which is has to do every day). A huge step backward from the progress made by apple with touch sensor.
  • Peichen - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Wow, that's some thin MacBook. I like how Apple introduced so many new tech and techniques to get it down so thin and light.
  • illi2014 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Curious to know the difference between the $600 ASUS Zenbook UX305 and the new $1300 MacBook. Both sport the new Intel Core M fanless processors, similar displays (res), weight (~1.2kg), build (full-metal), thinness (~13mm) etc. Does the underlying hardware explain the 2x difference in price?
  • jameskatt - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

You forget that the Mac runs OSX and can simultaneously run any other OS virtually. The PC does not run OSX. The difference in price is the operating system and the Apple experience which is simply better than on any PC.
  • Antronman - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Every time I see a comment like this, I'm instantly reminded as to how it is at all possible Apple gets such huge earnings.

People who complain about Windows being inaccessible (lol) and Linux being too accessible.

    Where there's a shepherd, there's always sheep.
  • waldoh - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

    $600 trackpad and keyboard technology
  • aliasfox - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

The new MacBook is about half a pound lighter (0.9 kg vs 1.2 kg), and if other Apple laptops are any indication, offers PCI-E based storage, roughly twice as fast as SATA3 storage that the ASUS uses.

Also, for some reason I couldn't find a US distributor for the UX305, but the German price is 999 EUR. Still cheaper, but not 1/2 the price.
  • Glaurung - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

    1. The displays are not similar -- the zenbook only has 1080p, the macbook has 1440p. The mac's display is calibrated at the factory, the zenbook's is not.
    2. As with all Macs, you're paying extra for several things that don't fit on a spec sheet -- the ability to run OSX, superior build quality and aesthetics, and in-person customer service and support available at any Apple store.
  • fteoath64 - Wednesday, March 11, 2015 - link

coreM sucks in perf. Target for bussiness people doing email and video only, with minimal weight and volume so they can sneak into baggage. One can do photo upload with wifi and do light photo retouching. Its limited. ipad can do almost as much for lighter!
  • SirKnobsworth - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

So their website is saying that the type c port supports "USB 3.1 Gen 1 (up to 5 Gbps)," AKA USB 3.0 over a type c connection.
  • ezridah - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

No new AppleTV hardware? No AppleTV app store? No upgraded display for MacBook Airs? Weak. As. Fuck.

Everything announced here is ho-hum. If that new MacBook only cost like $800 it might be a bit more exciting. Pricing it the same as MacBook Airs doesn't make any sense...

Could give two shits about the stupid watch.
  • agentbb007 - Monday, March 9, 2015 - link

Darn I was hoping to get a 42mm sport but buy a 42mm Link Bracelet for less than $500. But the 42mm Link Bracelet alone is $450 so it would put me and $850 before tax, ouch. Don't see how I can pay that much for a watch that will probably be the last generation in a year when Apple Watch 2 come sout.
  • fteoath64 - Wednesday, March 11, 2015 - link

Yes people. apple just began to sell StrapWare!! Its still hardware that does nothing in particular but looks cool. Cost a bundle while reminding you of Apple's intricate craftmanship. Oh, machined is not really craftmanship if you would check with real Swiss watch makers. It is just build quality.

ITS SO BIZARRE listening to tech people talk about a fashion product. I actually have worked in both industries(which I think makes me unicorn) and I can tell you the worlds are so different. The people, whats important to them, what they value, how they view the world, etc…

For many tech people this product is batshit crazy…and for the fashion world its completely normal.
