Introduction

It's time once again for AnandTech's Memory and Motherboard price guide.

The basic goal is to provide you with the best deals, and follow price trends of the listed products. We have selected a leading team of on-line vendors, and will be tracking their progress on weekly basis. Please note that all vendors were selected according to their best price offered. Some vendors may ask that you place a phone-order to make sure that you receive our listed price; others simply ask that you mention where you found the price (in this case AnandTech). We have tried to eliminate vendors with low feedback rating, but we do encourage you to do some research before purchasing any product from this list.

If you encounter any problems with a vendor on our list, please email us, and we will take appropriate action. Remember that we will only list vendors with positive customer feedback. If you have any suggestions, don't hesitate to let us know.

Also be sure to check out AnandTech's Hot Deals Forum for even more great memory, motherboard, CPU, video card and other technology buys.

This Week

Welcome to the Second Edition of AnandTech's Memory and Motherboard Price Guide for April.

With this week's guide prices have gone more in the direction of stabilization marked by the unchanged prices of many memory modules as well as quite a few motherboards. Since our last guide Crucial has now begun to sell their PC2100 DDR SDRAM modules which are significantly cheaper than what was currently available in the market. RDRAM is actually in flux this week with a big price hike and price drops. Most PC133 and PC100 modules have remained the same or dropped slightly.

Prices amongst Socket-370/Slot-1/Socket-423 motherboards have not changed much and in some cases not at all. There are no price hikes to report but only several scattered price drops with the exception of Pentium 4 boards which continue their downward plunge. This correlates with the continued plunge in prices of the Pentium 4 processor as reported in our CPU and Video Card Price Guide.

Though the drops are not that great, most Socket-A boards have fallen in price including some DDR boards which is no surprise. We've also added a new motherboard to the Socket-A DDR list which is the VIA KT266-based Microstar K7T Pro266 making three choices for a Socket-A DDR solution available.

As mentioned earlier, Crucial is now selling PC2100 modules that debuted for $104 and now has risen to $115 (256MB module) which is a whopping 38% less in price than what was available in the market. PC1600 memory has actually gone up in price. At one time DDR SDRAM modules were quite expensive, almost out of the question for the consumer, but now we're beginning to see that these modules can be affordable since there is only a shy difference between the prices of 256MB of PC2100 memory and 256MB of PC133 CAS2 memory. However, a motherboard supporting DDR memory will cost you quite a bit more than your regular PC133-supported motherboard. RDRAM, except for the price hike with the 256MB part, is still on the fall.

PC133 and PC100 memory prices are for the most part the same as they were last week except for a few drops here and there. PC "150" modules have come down in price, more so then their PC133 and PC100 cousins.

Prices for most Socket-370/Slot-1 motherboards have stayed the same with the exception of a few drops with i815E and i815EP-based boards. Though prices haven't changed much, Pentium III chips continue their fall in price so if you're looking for a P3 solution take a look into some of these boards. We still recommend the ASUS CUSL2 and CUSL2-C for their layout, stability, performance, and overclockability.

There are no changes to report with VIA Apollo Pro 133A-based boards. These boards, especially the ASUS CUV4X and Soyo SY-7VCA are great if you're looking for a budget solution for a Socket-370 system.

i850 boards continue to fall in price though they are still quite expensive compared to i815E/EP boards. Though they are expensive, prices are still falling for RDRAM, i850 mobos, and P4 chips. As far as VIA Pro266 DDR boards are concerned, there are a few decent drops but nothing too significant. When we get more of Pro266-based boards in the lab we'll be able to provide you with some recommendations.

Prices for a good number Socket-A motherboards this week have fallen including some KT133 and DDR boards and most KT133A and KM133 boards. As we mentioned in our recent Socket-A roundup, the KT133A does quite well in performance tests considering the current needs of applications and games. However, as these applications and games become more demanding, the need for a higher memory bandwidth solution will become evident. But since that time is yet to come, if you're looking for a great KT133A motherboard, consider the Iwill KK266 which we applauded for it's exceptional overall performance.

Though KM133 boards include integrated video, the performance from Gigabyte's GA-7ZMM is below par thus we cannot recommend any boards from this platform.

From the DDR bunch, the more expensive AMD 760-based motherboards will be the highest performing Socket-A solution for some time as we said in our Socket-A comparison. As you can see, the ASUS A7M266 and Gigabyte GA-7DXC have come down nicely in price. Ali Magik 1-based boards are still not mature enough to earn our recommendation. New to our Socket-A DDR bunch is the MSI K7T Pro266 motherboard based on the VIA KT266 chipset which we found to be not as high performing as the AMD 760, but much better than the Ali Magik 1. However, the KT133A outperforms the KT266 in benchmarks and needs more maturing like the ALi Magik 1 so we recommend against buying it at this point in time.
